tao, being, taoism

what is the difference in learning about taoism
and learning about the tao?

or learning tao
and being?

  • Dmytryo   I give you formulae : 50 % teachings on Tao and 50 % what you can come up with , if you give                100 % towards teachings you diminish your individuality
    Jerry Hill if you surrender your individuality you ARE tao
    Jerry Hill individuality
    what a pregnant word!
    Don    just different words…
    John    Or…just being
    Vicki   Each person interpretes for herself.
    Lee   The written Tao is an expression of the Tao that can’t be told. We and the universe are a living expression of the eternal Tao. When we follow the Buddha-Dharma we are able to connect, live with and realise this simple living truth.
    Jerry Hill “surrender” is not exactly the right word, nor is donate. bequeath implies death and we exist in eternity… “to make a gift of” in the sense of the oath of kwan yin….. perhaps the word lao tzu uses: “serve”

the cycle of destiny

Tao Te Ching — Chapter 16

ATTAIN THE HIGHEST OPENNESS;
MAINTAIN THE DEEPEST HARMONY.
BECOME A PART OF ALL THINGS;
IN THIS WAY, I PERCEIVE THE CYCLES.
INDEED, THINGS ARE NUMEROUS;
BUT EACH CYCLE MERGES WITH THE SOURCE.
MERGING WITH THE SOURCE IS CALLED HARMONIZING;
THIS IS KNOWN AS THE CYCLE OF DESTINY.
THE CYCLE OF DESTINY IS CALLED THE ABSOLUTE;
KNOWING THE ABSOLUTE IS CALLED INSIGHT.
TO NOT KNOW THE ABSOLUTE
IS TO RECKLESSLY BECOME A PART OF MISFORTUNE.
TO KNOW THE ABSOLUTE IS TO BE TOLERANT.
WHAT IS TOLERANT BECOMES IMPARTIAL;
WHAT IS IMPARTIAL BECOMES POWERFUL;
WHAT IS POWERFUL BECOMES NATURAL;
WHAT IS NATURAL BECOMES TAO.
WHAT HAS TAO BECOMES EVERLASTING AND FREE FROM
HARM THROUGHOUT LIFE.

practicing eternity

In the beginning was the Tao.
All things issue from it;
all things return to it.

To find the origin,
trace back the manifestations.
When you recognize the children
and find the mother,
you will be free of sorrow.

If you close your mind in judgments
and traffic with desires,
your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging
and aren’t led by the senses,
your heart will find peace.

Seeing into darkness is clarity.
Knowing how to yield is strength.
Use your own light
and return to the source of light.
This is called practicing eternity.

i have pondered it for over a decade. i couldn’t explain what happened. a young man rushed directly towards me and i stood still waiting to see what would happen. i honestly didn’t know. i was relaxed. calm. still. when the young man came within arm’s reach of me i was still standing still; a moment later, he was on the ground and i had never touched him, did not put my hands on him. my body, without any participation from my conscious, effortfull mind, spun in a quick circle, and he was gasping for breath, his wind knocked out of him. i was as surprised as he was. i just now realized – over a decade later, what actually happened: he never touched me and i never touched him. the timing of the effortless circle was such that i disappeared from the space he occupied an instant before he got there, almost as if creating an energy tornado. he was sucked in and thrown energetically out with no contact necessary between us. magic! thank you sifu!
